Despite a bounceback season finishing 8-5 in 2024 after a 6-7 dip in 2023, Fleck recognizes the program’s need to elevate its ambitions. The Gophers’ schedule includes challenging matchups against Ohio State, Nebraska, and Oregon, alongside their traditional rivalry game against Wisconsin (which ended in a 63-63 tie). Previous expectations – simply “beat Wisconsin, and you’re good” – have shifted to demanding double-digit wins and national contention.
While acknowledging the program’s recent successes – including six consecutive bowl game victories – Fleck is realistic about the challenges ahead. “This is not a team that is going to go to Oregon and win, or go to Ohio State and win,” acknowledged FOX Sports’ Chris Fallica. The team’s roster includes key players like running back Darius Taylor and two-way star Koi Perich, but Fleck admits they won’t be able to pull upsets against top programs.
RJ Young recently ranked Minnesota as the 69th team on his list of 136 FBS teams, up four places from last year. Despite years of single-digit finishes, Fleck hopes to meet expectations, stating, “Of course, we want to set that standard and expectation that high. Why wouldn’t we?” The Gophers’ success hinges on building upon their recent gains and securing at least eight wins, acknowledging the considerable obstacles standing in their way.
