Nikola Jokic, the three-time NBA Most Valuable Player, has acknowledged grappling with fatigue and jet lag following his return from representing Serbia at the FIBA EuroBasket 2025. The Denver Nuggets center admitted the transatlantic travel significantly impacted his recovery, describing the return as “really rough.”
Despite the initial challenges, Jokic has demonstrated a swift return to form, contributing effectively in the team’s preseason games. He scored 14 points in 19 minutes against the Minnesota Timberwolves and followed up with a 17-point, six-rebound, and five-assist performance against the Toronto Raptors.
Recognizing the difficulties faced by new teammate Cam Johnson, Jokic offered sage advice during a recent training session. “He’s like thinking over much and like he’s trying to fit in,” Jokic stated. “I told him, don’t try to fit in. You’re a really important part of this offense. Be yourself and don’t try to think, Should I do this or should I do that? Just play your game and be aggressive in the moment or in the role that you given.”
Johnson’s early preseason statistics – totaling just 13 points and two assists – highlight the adjustment period. Coach David Adelman is encouraging Johnson to embrace his role and play with aggression.
With championship aspirations firmly in mind, the Nuggets are focused on players settling into the team’s system and building confidence ahead of the upcoming regular season. All eyes will be on whether Johnson heeds Jokic’s advice, plays aggressively, and adapts seamlessly to his new role in a team poised for a significant challenge.
