Forgotten MLB Veteran Sends Emotional Plea to LA Angels After Albert Pujols Dream Shattered

Bo Porter, a respected figure within the Los Angeles Angels clubhouse, has publicly expressed his desire to become the team’s manager. The former Houston Astros skipper spent the last two seasons with the Angels, most recently serving as the third base coach in 2025. Porter recently communicated his intentions directly to the organization, asserting his belief he’s now prepared to step into a leadership role.

“I would enjoy managing the Angels because I’ve been there the last two years; I’ve made an investment there. The relationships have already been fortified,” Porter stated. He highlighted a period working alongside Ron Washington after Washington’s leave of absence for medical reasons and subsequent departure, reigniting his passion for managerial experience. “Now that I’ve been back on the field with managerial experience, you see the game through a different lens; the game slows down because you’ve been in that position where you made those decisions… I’m better prepared to manage. I needed to get back on the field.”

Following the news that Albert Pujols would not be taking the Angels’ managerial position – confirmed by Mark Feinsand – and with the Orioles and Padres still showing interest, Porter’s resolve has strengthened. He has communicated his interest to General Manager Perry Minasian and Angels owner Arte Moreno. “I expressed my interest to [owner Arte Moreno] that I would love to interview for the job. That’s something [general manager Perry Minasian] would have to take back to Arte, and they can make that decision. I believe I have a lot to offer to any organization that gives me a second chance.”

At 53 years old, Porter’s experience – including managing the rebuilding Houston Astros from 2013 to 2014, alongside extensive time in broadcasting and league offices – has prepared him for this opportunity.

If not the Angels, where will Albert Pujols land?

The managerial future of Albert Pujols is rapidly evolving, with the Angels now off the board. The immediate question is: if not in Los Angeles, where? Baltimore appears to be a leading contender. ESPN sources indicate the Baltimore Orioles require a manager to guide their young core. Furthermore, Orioles President of Baseball Operations Mike Elias has prior knowledge of Pujols from his time with the St. Louis Cardinals, and Pujols is connected to key Orioles prospects like Jackson Holliday. The Orioles’ recent 101-win 2023 season and playoff appearance, despite a stumble in 2025, are fueling interest.

Baltimore’s roster – featuring Jackson Holliday, Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Coby Mayo, and Samuel Basallo – represents a significant opportunity. Pujols has been proactively preparing for this step, having led the Dominican winter ball team and being appointed manager for the Dominican Republic in next year’s World Baseball Classic. The prospect of a comfortable, familiar environment is clearly appealing.
