Lindsay Mendez has addressed the viral clip circulating online depicting her co-star, Jonathan Groff, seemingly spitting on stage during their production of *Merrily We Roll Along*. The actress, along with Groff and Daniel Radcliffe, participated in a Lie Detector Test for *Vanity Fair*, where Mendez asked Groff, “You’re a notoriously spitty singer… How many times do you think you spit on us during the production of *Merrily We Roll Along*?”
Groff responded, “A lot,” explaining that he stays hydrated during the performance. Mendez, in an exclusive interview with *Us Weekly* at the Cinema Society screening of the *Merrily We Roll Along* film, stated, “It happens,” and added, “I love him so much that I don’t give a s* how much he spits.”
Mendez emphasized the positive impact of her relationship with Groff and Radcliffe, describing it as a uniquely supportive “throuple.” “I haven’t had another throuple relationship like this one… every person fulfills the right kind of space for the friendship to function and it’s one of the greatest of my life, I feel,” she explained.
The production of *Merrily We Roll Along* on Broadway ran from October 2023 to July 2024. The film adaptation, released December 5th, follows the same storyline of the troubled relationship between composer Franklin Shepard (Groff) and his friends, Charley Kringas (Radcliffe) and Mary Flynn (Mendez).
Furthermore, a longer-term film adaptation is in development, directed by Richard Linklater, starring Paul Mescal, Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein as Mary. Mendez expressed admiration for Feldstein and offered advice: “It’s so different. She’s telling the story front to back. My big advice [would be] to really let things go as you tell the scene, but she’s going to have such a different, amazing experience. Enjoy and cling on to these amazing people that you get to play best friends with. It’s such a fun ride to get to experience that friendship every day.”
