Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s downfall as a working royal is unquestionably intertwined with his connection to the late disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. While Mountbatten-Windsor has always denied any wrongdoing, he was accused by Virginia Giuffre (née Roberts) of sexually assaulting her three times when she was 17 years old. The two apparently met through Epstein and his companion Ghislaine Maxwell, the latter of whom was convicted of sex trafficking of a minor following Epstein’s death by suicide in 2019 (Maxwell maintains her innocence).
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s Introduction to Jeffrey Epstein
Mountbatten-Windsor told BBC Newsnight journalist Emily Maitlis in a bombshell 2019 interview that he was introduced to Epstein in 1999, which differs from notes taken by the prince’s private secretary in 2011, which specified that Mountbatten-Windsor and the financier met in “the early 1990s”. Maitlis pressed him repeatedly on the nature of their relationship, highlighting instances where Epstein had been seen with the prince and suggesting that Mountbatten-Windsor had been aware of Epstein’s activities.
The Epstein Circle
Throughout the interview, it was revealed that Mountbatten-Windsor had attended several events with Epstein, including a charity gala in New York City in 2006, and a dinner party at Epstein’s mansion in Palm Beach. He admitted to having known Epstein “through mutual acquaintances” and described their relationship as “a brief acquaintance” but stressed he was unaware of Epstein’s later crimes.
Giuffre’s Allegations and Legal Battles
Virginia Giuffre, who had previously accused Mountbatten-Windsor of sexual assault, continued to allege that the prince had been aware of Epstein’s predatory behavior. Her legal team sought to demonstrate a pattern of behavior and a willingness on the part of Mountbatten-Windsor to associate with a dangerous individual. In 2021, Giuffre filed a lawsuit against Mountbatten-Windsor, alleging intentional infliction of emotional distress. Despite mounting evidence and legal challenges, the lawsuit ultimately settled out of court.
A Damning Interview and a Step Back
The fallout from a 2019 BBC Newsnight interview significantly impacted Mountbatten-Windsor’s position. Maitlis’s persistent questioning, combined with newly released evidence, led the prince to announce in November 2019 that he would step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, citing the disruption to his family’s work and the valuable organizations he supported.
New Revelations and a Final Resignation
In October 2025, with tensions still high surrounding the Epstein scandal, Mountbatten-Windsor announced that he would give up his royal title. Virginia Giuffre’s family expressed deep disappointment that U.K. police had dropped an investigation into the allegations without explanation. Newly released photos from Epstein’s estate, obtained as part of a House Oversight Committee investigation, further complicated the situation, showing Mountbatten-Windsor alongside other prominent figures.
No Further Police Action
In December 2025, the Metropolitan Police confirmed they would take “no further action” against Mountbatten-Windsor over allegations that he had provided Giuffre’s date of birth and social security number to a protection officer.
A Final End to the Royal Role
With the Prince’s decision to step back, King Charles III initiated the process to strip him of his royal titles, officially renaming him Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Mountbatten-Windsor will no longer reside at Royal Lodge.
