Las Vegas Raiders legend Derek Carr has announced plans to unretire and potentially sign a one-day contract with the Raiders, following strong public comments regarding the trade of wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Carr, who abruptly announced his retirement from the NFL earlier this offseason, has since been vocal about the Raiders’ roster decisions. His comments came during an appearance on “Home Grown with David & Derek Carr.”
Initially, Carr stated his intention to remain retired, asserting he was “not coming back” from the NFL, even if he were to return. However, he expressed a desire to do so with the Raiders, acknowledging the potential for a symbolic gesture.
“I would love to do that with the Raiders,” Carr stated. “But we haven’t gotten to that point yet.”
Carr’s comments followed the Raiders’ trade of Meyers to the Jaguars in exchange for fourth and sixth-round draft picks. The former Raiders quarterback expressed his belief that Meyers could have thrived as a top target in Vegas, emphasizing his versatility and potential to play across multiple positions.
“I told you this was going to happen last week,” Carr stated. “Jakobi can be a No. 1 target guy. You can throw him the ball, he’s going to be open. He can play every down, he can play the slot, he can play outside.”
Carr’s sentiments reflect a broader concern regarding the Raiders’ handling of its players. He also acknowledged the difficulty of watching a valued player depart, particularly for veteran leaders like Maxx Crosby.
The Raiders’ decision to trade Meyers, despite his talent, aligns with the team’s strategy of building for the future through draft capital. With a 2-6 record and limited playoff aspirations under head coach Pete Carroll, the trade represents a calculated move to prioritize long-term assets. Until the Saints formally release Carr or grant him permission to sign elsewhere, a one-day contract with the Raiders remains unlikely.
