Chelsea 3-0 Wolves, Player Ratings: Garnacho ‘top without the ball’, and with it, too!

Chelsea continued their impressive start to the season with a dominant 3-0 victory over Wolves at Stamford Bridge. Alejandro Garnacho once again proved to be a standout performer, while Enzo Fernández continued to impress, and Estêvão made a crucial impact from the bench. Here’s a breakdown of the key players’ ratings after the game.

1. ALEJANDRO GARNACHO (8.4)

Garnacho’s Chelsea career began somewhat auspiciously, as he was partially at fault for Brentford’s last-gasp equalizer on his debut. And, more pertinently, it’s taken him a while to show what his talents and his game are all about. We had seen a few glimpses — and surely had some idea from his days with Manchester United — but with two goals and, now, two assists to his name in his last four games, it’s fair to say that he’s settling in and starting to make a difference. And not just on the ball, as Enzo Maresca acknowledged after Saturday’s win.

“Garnacho played a fantastic game on the ball, but he was also top without the ball…this is what we need from our wingers. He arrived here from another club where he was not training 100 per cent, so his physical condition was not good. Slowly, slowly [we have worked on that] and now it’s better. He is doing very well on the ball and is doing well off the ball. He knows that, to play with us, he has to be good on the ball and off the ball. We are very happy with him in this moment.” – Enzo Maresca; source: Chelsea FC

2. ENZO FERNÁNDEZ (8.2)

Garnacho may have been Man of the Match with his two assists, but this was surely one of Enzo’s best games in a Chelsea shirt as well. He did not show up on the scoresheet — secondary assists long overdue for proper recognition — but he was prime Fàbregas or Lampard with some of his passing from central midfield. And apparently he did all while dealing with a painful bone edema in his knee! Hopefully a bit of rest will do him good; when Enzo is at his best, our odds of winning increase greatly.

3. ESTÊVÃO (7.9, Sub)

It took Estêvão exactly 67 seconds to set up our second goal, which effectively decided the outcome of the match. Maresca has been judicious in doling out minutes and opportunities to the wonderboy — understandably so, four months into his first European season at age 18 — and it sure is nice to have him come off the bench to make an impact later in games.
