SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State Aztecs secured a dominant 121-59 victory over Whittier College on Monday afternoon, setting a new program scoring record at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs’ offensive strategy, centered on attacking the basket, resulted in 43 of their 50 field goals being scored within the arc, alongside 84 points earned in the paint.
Head Coach Brian Dutcher emphasized the team’s focus on this approach. “We basically ‘Arizona-ed’ ‘em — we got all the rebounds and we dominated in the paint, so that was good that our guys realized that,” he said. “With one day, they knew where the strength was and they put it in there. Whether it was against zone or man, we threw it inside to our bigs and they produced, and it was all of them.”
Pharoah Compton led the Aztecs in scoring with a career-high 21 points, punctuated by four dunks. Tae Simmons also matched a career high of 15 points. The Aztecs showcased a balanced attack with six players contributing double-digit points.
The initial surge of 14 points, coupled with eight early field goals in the paint, quickly established SDSU’s control. The halftime score reflected this dominance, with the Aztecs boasting 62 points. Only seven of the 45 shot attempts came from beyond the arc, with the team achieving a season-high of 23 two-point field goals.
Jeremiah Oden contributed 14 points and six rebounds, while Magoon Gwath’s early dropstep layin put SDSU in the lead. Miles Heide added 12 points and four rebounds.
The Aztecs’ scoring culminated with Tae Simmons recording the 100th point of the game, and Raymar Gonzales scored his first career NCAA bucket.
Whittier College, led by Jonathan Dudley’s 13 points, struggled to contend with SDSU’s inside-oriented attack.
Following non-conference play, SDSU is currently ranked seventh in the Mountain West Conference NET rankings. The team will commence Mountain West Conference play on Tuesday, Dec. 30th against the San José State Spartans at the Provident Credit Union Event Center. SDSU’s next home conference game is against the Boise State Broncos at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026.
