MLB: Rangers’ First Baseman to Undergo Surgery After a Frustrating Season

ARLINGTON, TX – September 29, 2025 – Rangers first baseman, Miguel “El Toro” Ramirez, has announced he will undergo surgery on his left knee, effectively ending his 2025 season and raising questions about his long-term future with the team. The announcement was made earlier today by the Rangers’ medical staff following a diagnosis of a partial ligament tear.

Ramirez, a 28-year-old veteran acquired by the Rangers in a trade with the Yankees prior to the 2023 season, has struggled significantly this year, particularly after a promising start. He began the season with a .285 batting average and 12 home runs, fueling hopes of a productive season. However, a series of nagging injuries and subsequent setbacks culminated in a significant decline in his performance. Through September 28th, Ramirez’s batting average had plummeted to .228 with only 6 home runs and 23 RBIs.

“This has been a challenging season for me, both on and off the field,” Ramirez stated in a press conference this afternoon. “I’ve fought through a lot of discomfort, and it’s clear I need to address this issue to ensure I can return to playing at the level I’m capable of.”

The surgery, scheduled for October 3rd in Dallas, will be performed by Dr. Ricardo Vargas, a specialist in sports medicine. The expected recovery time is estimated at six to eight weeks. This means Ramirez is likely to miss the remainder of the 2025 season, and his return date remains uncertain.

“We’re committed to providing Miguel with the best possible care and supporting his recovery,” said Rangers General Manager, David Miller. “His dedication and work ethic are commendable, and we believe this surgery is the necessary step to get him back on the field.”

The Rangers have not yet announced a plan for filling Ramirez’s role on the roster. Options being considered include calling up prospects from Triple-A Round Rock, or exploring trade possibilities. The team is expected to provide an update on Ramirez’s status following the surgery.

This injury adds to a difficult season for the Rangers, who are currently fighting for a playoff berth. The team’s performance will undoubtedly be impacted by the loss of their valuable first baseman.
